What this tool does

Turn digits into English words. Type or paste numbers, pick a mode, and the words appear beside the input as you type. It is useful for invoices, cheques, contracts, and anywhere a number has to be written out in full. Everything runs in your browser.

Modes

  • Cardinal — 1234 becomes one thousand two hundred thirty-four. Decimals are read digit by digit: 3.14 becomes three point one four, .5 becomes zero point five, and negatives get a minus prefix.
  • Ordinal — 21 becomes twenty-first, 101 becomes one hundred first, and 1000 becomes one thousandth. Ordinal mode expects a whole number on the line.
  • Currency — 1234.56 becomes one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents. Choose the currency; amounts round to two decimals. Japanese yen has no subunit, so amounts round to the nearest yen.
  • Year — 1999 becomes nineteen ninety-nine, 1905 becomes nineteen oh five, and 2010 becomes twenty ten.

Style and options

The US/UK switch controls the and after hundreds: US gives one hundred one, UK gives one hundred and one. Capitalize first letter is handy when the output starts a sentence or a cheque line.

Batch input

Each line is converted on its own. In cardinal, currency, and year modes, numbers inside a line are replaced in place, so I have 12 apples and 3.5 pears becomes I have twelve apples and three point five pears. A line that is not a number is left exactly as it was, and digits glued to a word or a version string (like iPhone15 or 1.2.3) are left alone, so mixed text is safe to paste. Integers are handled up to 36 digits; anything longer is left unchanged.

Privacy

Nothing is sent anywhere. The conversion happens in your browser, and the input is only stored on your device if you have enabled per-tool memory.
