What is the Markdown editor?

Markdown is a lightweight markup language for writing formatted text. This editor renders Markdown into HTML as you type, so you can draft documentation, notes, and README files without uploading your content.

How to use it

  1. Write or paste Markdown in the editor.
  2. Watch the preview update automatically as you type.
  3. Switch between Edit, Split, and Preview views.
  4. Copy the rendered HTML, download the source as a .md file, or open an existing Markdown file.

Supported syntax

The preview supports CommonMark plus common extensions: headings, emphasis, lists, task lists, links, images, blockquotes, code blocks, tables, strikethrough, autolinked URLs, and GitHub-style fenced code blocks with syntax highlighting.

Raw HTML in the source is escaped rather than rendered, and external links open in a new tab.

Privacy and limits

Everything is processed locally in your browser. Input is limited to 1 MB so the page stays responsive, and Markdown files larger than 1 MB cannot be opened.

HTML output

The Copy HTML button copies the rendered HTML for the current document. The preview uses the same styling as the rendered content elsewhere on the site.
