Spell text with the NATO phonetic alphabet

Paste text on the left and each word is spelled out letter by letter with NATO code words, one source word per line. Switch to decode mode to turn code words back into text. Use "Use as input" to move the result back into the input field without re-pasting when flipping direction.

Three modes are available:

  • Text → code words: spell letters and digits with the standard code words.
  • Text → code words (aviation): also apply ICAO radiotelephony digit pronunciations — 3, 4, 5, 9 become Tree, Fower, Fife, Niner.
  • Code words → text: decode code words back into uppercase text.

Digits are spoken Zero through Nine. Alfa and Juliett are the official NATO/ICAO spellings, chosen so non-English speakers pronounce them correctly; decoding also accepts the common Alpha, Juliet, and Xray variants.

Notes

  • Each source word gets its own line when encoding, because whitespace is the only word boundary that can be restored on decode.
  • Punctuation, symbols, and non-Latin characters pass through unchanged, and unrecognized words are kept as-is on decode — nothing is silently dropped.
  • Decoding is case-insensitive; output uses uppercase letters.

Useful for reading names, passwords, or call signs over the phone or radio.
