What does this color extractor and picker do?
This tool turns a picture into both an eyedropper and a palette generator. Drop in a JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, or AVIF image and:
- Pick colors with a magnifier — move the mouse over the image and a lens follows the cursor, showing a zoomed-in view with a crosshair on the exact pixel. Click to add that color to your palette.
- Extract the dominant palette — choose Dominant, 5, 10, or 20 colors and the tool returns a balanced palette with HEX, RGB, HSL, and HSV values plus how much of the image each color covers.
- Build your own palette — both manual picks and extracted colors feed one shared palette you can copy and export.
Picking colors with the magnifier
The magnifier draws the pixels around your cursor at a configurable zoom (4× to 16×) so you can target a single pixel even in detailed images. The center of the lens is the color you will pick. Sampling averages a small neighborhood, which keeps the result steady when a source image is noisy.
How palette extraction works
The tool downscales the image to a small preview, then runs median-cut quantization: it repeatedly splits the pixels along the channel with the widest range until the requested number of color groups remains, and averages each group into one swatch. This produces representative, evenly distributed palettes rather than a single average color.
Copy and export
- Click any swatch to copy its HEX value; every picked color also shows one-click copy for RGB and HSL.
- "Copy all" copies every HEX, RGB, or HSL value as a list for the whole palette.
- Export the palette as an Adobe Swatch Exchange ASE file (for Photoshop and Illustrator), a JSON file, a CSS file of variables, a GIMP .gpl palette (for GIMP and Inkscape), or a rendered PNG strip of swatches.
Which mode should you pick?
- Dominant: a single representative main color for the whole image.
- 5 colors: a compact palette good for UI themes and branding.
- 10 colors: a richer palette for detailed illustrations and mood boards.
- 20 colors: the fullest palette for photography and complex artwork.
