Screen Recorder — Record Screen Online
Record your screen, a window, or a browser tab with system and microphone audio, then download the WebM. All local, nothing uploaded.
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your input is never uploaded.
The captured picture and sound stay in your browser and are never uploaded. Recording stops when you close or reload this page.
What to record
This only pre-selects the default in the browser's share picker — the picker always has the final say.
Audio
Tab audio works in Chrome and Edge; capturing system sound additionally needs Windows. macOS may require granting your browser Screen Recording permission in System Settings on first use.
Quality and format
How the online screen recorder works
Press Start recording and your browser shows the system share picker: choose the entire screen, a single application window, or one browser tab. The picture is captured with getDisplayMedia and encoded by the browser's own MediaRecorder, so nothing is ever uploaded — the finished WebM lives in memory until you download it.
- Audio: enable tab/system sound, your microphone, or both. When both are on, they are mixed into one track locally with WebAudio. If the chosen source has no sound, the tool tells you and records video only.
- Quality: pick a resolution cap (up to 4K), a frame rate (15–60 fps), and a bitrate, or leave everything on auto. Advanced settings add cursor capture mode and a content hint that favours sharp text or smooth motion.
- Pause and resume: paused stretches are not counted in the duration, and the live preview lets you confirm what is actually being captured.
- Safety rails: an optional 3-second countdown, a warning if the recording grows past 1 GB, and a guard against closing the page mid-recording. Clicking the browser's own "Stop sharing" button ends the recording cleanly.
The file is named with the recording's local timestamp, e.g. screen-recording-20260928-143205.webm. Recordings have no length limit — very long sessions simply produce large files, so keep an eye on the size counter.
One quirk comes from the WebM format itself: files written by the browser often lack a duration field, so some players show an unknown length or limit seeking until the video has been fully played once. VLC and recent Chrome/Edge handle it fine; re-encoding through any converter also fixes it.
Browser notes
- Chrome / Edge: the most complete experience, including tab audio. Windows can also capture system sound.
- Safari 13+: supported; exports MP4 instead of WebM. No system-audio capture.
- Firefox: screen and window capture work; tab selection and system audio are limited.
- macOS: the first recording requires granting your browser Screen Recording permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- DRM-protected video (Netflix and friends) always records as a black frame — that is a browser rule, not a tool limit.
Everything runs locally: no account, no upload, and no server round-trip.
